Former Apple Engineer Sentenced to 6 Months in Prison for Trade Secret Theft: Tech News Roundup
By:
,
This week in the tech industry, a former engineer at Apple has received a six-month prison sentence for stealing trade secrets related to the company's self-driving car technology. Xiaolang Zhang, who had taken parental leave from Apple, opted not to return and began working for a Chinese self-driving car startup instead. Apple conducted an investigation and found that Zhang had stolen various files, including the blueprint for a self-driving car circuit. The FBI pressed charges against him in 2018. In other Apple news, owners of the Apple Vision Pro headset have discovered that the only way to reset the password on the device is by visiting an Apple store in person. Users who forget their password and sought assistance on Apple's support forum were informed that they need to attach a Developer Strap, available only to registered developers, to the headset in order to reset it. Until Apple develops a better solution, most users will have to go to a physical store for password resets. Meanwhile, Brian Eno, the musician and artist, has unveiled the Turntable II, a record player inspired by his experiments with light. Made from acrylic LED lights, the turntable features automatic color-changing effects, regardless of whether it is playing a vinyl record or not. The Turntable II is considered a collector's item, with only 150 units produced and priced at $25,000 USD (£20,000 GBP) each. Currently, it is being exhibited at London's Paul Stolper Gallery. In the world of dating apps, Tinder has introduced a new warning system aimed at deterring inappropriate messages and promoting positive interactions. The platform has implemented a feature that issues warnings to users who send potentially harassive or advertising-related messages. The warnings, such as "Are You Sure?", serve as reminders to maintain respectful behavior. Tinder will utilize algorithms and human verification to monitor and address these interactions. Users who repeatedly receive warnings may face permanent bans from the app.
