During the bustling Frieze Art Week 2024 in Los Angeles, Hypeart is collaborating with auction house giant Bonhams for a unique auction series entitled Instructions for a Memory Device. Set in the fresh Bonhams space, the curated collection by Hypeart offers a glimpse into an artistic time capsule, inviting attendees to immerse themselves in nostalgia while creating new memories. The collaboration between Hypeart and Bonhams pays tribute to their rich cultural histories and roots. Instructions for a Memory Device is a thought-provoking auction series curated by Hypeart that delves into the realm of nostalgia, weaving through a myriad of memories and emotions. Each piece in the series acts as a set of loose instructions, leading us through a maze of artist memories. From the vibrant brushstrokes to the intricate sculpted forms, these artworks capture moments that reside in the recesses of our minds. Noteworthy in the collection is a minimalist sculpture titled Cleaning Piece (1966/1988) by Yoko Ono, drawing inspiration from her "action poems" featured in the book Acorn, a follow-up to Ono's Grapefruit book of conceptual art. Another standout piece in the collection is a pair of distinctive works on paper by LA-based artist Glenn Akira Kaino titled Study for 19.83 #2 (2013) and Study for 19.83 #3 (2013), challenging the act of recalling memories. Kaino’s work 19.83 explores the translation of historical events into impactful images and the dual nature of memory — remembering and forgetting. It references Tommie Smith’s symbolic protest during the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, a gesture that embodies various causes and signifies a discourse on collective action and responsibility to past accomplishments. A preview of the exhibition for Instructions for a Memory Device will open on February 24, with a special reception featuring custom cocktails by Maestro Dobel Tequila launching on February 27.
