Renowned for his immersive light installations across various landscapes like deserts and mountains, James Turrell has now brought his distinctive artistic vision back to New York City with the installation of an illuminated skylight at a private school.
As part of his Skyspaces series comprising a total of 85 works worldwide, the latest piece dubbed “Leading Skyspace” has found its home at Friend Seminary school in Manhattan’s East Village. Housed within a small chamber room featuring wooden seating, the skylight offers a bespoke experience of the sky, enhanced by color-changing LED lights that reflect Turrell's penchant for vibrant hues.
Describing his Skyspaces as meticulously designed chambers that allow viewers to intimately engage with the sky through a precisely crafted roof opening, Turrell's team elaborated on the installation's dual functionality. By day, the aperture remains closed, unveiling an immersive light display that seamlessly integrates with the campus surroundings. At sunset, the aperture opens to reveal an unobstructed view of the sky, accompanied by an internal light sequence tailored to complement the shifting hues of dusk.
For those eager to experience “Leading Skyspace” firsthand, additional information can be found on the school's website, offering a glimpse into Turrell's transformative play with light and space within an urban setting.
